August-Early September 2013

I've got a some really exciting projects coming up in the next month! I'll be recording a new record with Amy Cimini as Architeuthis Walks on Land, and performing the complete version of my multi-movement piece Four Chambered Heart with Till by Turning and beautiful video by Paul Rowley in New York. Guess summer is over! Details below.

Architeuthis Walks on Land: EMPAC Residency
8/26-9/2 Amy Cimini and I will be in Troy, New York, recording a new record as Artists-In-Residence at EMPAC.

Till by Turning performs Four Chambered Heart
Launching the Music at First 2013-2014 season, Till by Turning premieres my concert-length cycle of pieces Four Chambered Heart. We are thrilled that award-winning filmmaker and visual artist Paul Rowley has created a video installation for the performance that hints at the work's avian and apocalyptic preoccupations.

Watch a preview video here! http://vimeo.com/70723507

Written for Till by Turning, Four Chambered Heart is a meditation on Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time. In this 8-movement piece for violin, viola, bassoon and piano, Young explores Messiean’s musical materials and time-suspending techniques through her own musical language, incorporating open and song forms, amplification, and noise. Four Chambered Heart grafts material and mundane apocalyptic suggestions onto Messiaen’s spiritual concerns. Coming from and returning to visual silence, Rowley has crafted a video for each of the piece’s interior 6 movements using colorful patterns, shifting repetitions, and suggestive imagery.

UPCOMING PERFORMANCES: Feb-Mar-April-2013

Thu 2/28-Sat 3/2 - E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E
E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E is an epic, town hall musical that pleads the case for a more empathetic economy, proposing, with Thomas Paine and Martin Luther King, money as everyone’s. Created by choreographer Daria Faïn and poet Robert Kocik, in collaboration with composer Katherine Young, vocalist Samita Sinha and The Commons Choir, E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E was developed by researching the sonic and connotative powers of language. 26 dancers, singers and actors treat our current inequity crisis with reparative tones, tunes and intentions while drawing on the body as horn of plenty.

The instrumental music is performed by and was developed in collaboration with Jen Baker (trombone) and Sam Sowyrda (percussion).

E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E rescheduled due to Sandy

Having rehearsed and teched, we were ready to go with E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E when Sandy hit, knocking out power in Lower Manhattan. NYLA is still without power as of Thursday, so the show has been cancelled for this week. The plan is to reschedule sometime this season.

Everyone from the production is safe and sound, so that is the main thing.
