Turning, Four Chambered Heart is a meditation on Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time. In this 8-movement piece for violin,
viola, bassoon and piano, Young explores
Messiean’s musical materials and time-suspending techniques through her own
musical language, incorporating open and song forms, amplification, and noise. Four Chambered Heart grafts material and
mundane apocalyptic suggestions onto Messiaen’s spiritual concerns. Coming from
and returning to visual silence, Rowley has crafted a video for each of the
piece’s interior 6 movements using colorful patterns, shifting repetitions, and
suggestive imagery.
What made Diligence so satisfying was that it brought the greatest strengths of both composer and performer into bold relief. Young’s compositional hallmarks—her visceral approach to sound; her organic use of repetition, structure, and pacing; her attentiveness to the smallest details of timbre; her adventurousness in using instruments in unexpected ways—made the work feel like a living thing, breathing and unfolding as the evening progressed. And Wulliman’s strongest characteristics as a performer—his intensity of focus, his absolute commitment to each musical gesture—made listeners feel that the pair’s collaborative vision was being fully embodied in each moment. - New Music Box
The product of over a year of work, Diligence comprises 3 pieces for solo violin, 1 piece for solo viola, and 1 piece for violin and chamber orchestra. These pieces are presented as part of an audio installation built from recordings of an array of instruments. Wulliman will navigate the performance using these instruments, which have been retuned and prepared so that each finds a unique niche within the overall work’s sonic ecosystem. Incorporating visual elements, including a video score that will be interpreted live, Diligence conjures a multi-layered environment. Employing amplification to bring out small sounds, Young will control the soundworld’s mix, manipulate samples live, and work with a detuned electric guitar.
