That is not the case for composer and bassoon virtuoso Katherine Young. Her LA Phil commission Spores was initially composed in 2017, its premiere delayed until Tuesday, first by illness, then by the pandemic. <br />If there is such a thing as a rock-star electric bassoonist, it would have to be Young. “She’s got more foot pedals than Jimi Hendrix,” Adams quipped.<br /><br />Young’s title is a reference to the reproductive units produced by mushrooms, some of which have managed to migrate around the globe. Another influence, Young said, was early electronic-music compositions. It makes for a fascinating blend — airborne “spores” in the form of electronics and phasing, plus extended sections of improvisation in which musicians are instructed to listen to what other musicians are playing and then riff on it.</p><p><br />Composed for electronic and acoustic bassoon, assorted brass, winds, strings, and a battery of percussion, including a pair of triangles, the piece is by turns as dense as molasses, as light as air (with the musicians encouraged to vocalize their breath), and as freewheeling as a trip down the open highway. <br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; is a long-distance collaboration by Linda Jankowska and Katherine
Young. The electroacoustic sound piece and aggregating multi-media
installation explores and transgresses the geographical, cultural,
psychological, and musical boundaries that impact how we share—and
modulate—our past, present, and future selves through collection and
interaction with our material world. Every-day objects with sentimental
meaning and memory-evoking power have been shared—recorded and remixed,
filmed and animated, collected and woven into a three-dimensional
tapestry. The project premiered in June 2022 in Chicago at 6018 North as
a site-specific multi-room installation, with the support of
Experimental Sound Studio.<br /><br />For ame, Katie and Linda will rework
the piece to suit the space and hopefully discover new dimension to
boundarymind’s expression. The community recording events are a way of
sharing the process of listening to memorable objects with other people.
The audience is invited to contribute their sounds and stories to
boundarymind’s sound archive with the intention of weaving them into
future live iterations of the piece as a shared meaning-making practice.</span></p>Katherine Younghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00645328760895939537noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3237080343163552894.post-56948229094569676202022-04-21T05:58:00.002-07:002022-04-21T06:58:46.769-07:00boundarymind - 5/21-6/5 - Chicago!<p><span style="font-size: large;"><b>boundarymind with Linda Jankowska </b></span><br /></p><p>installation, performance events, and community recording events</p><p> <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='449' height='373' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxUaY9RuUehDw9IgKTw1BYpkgFpMR-jzPjfikbGze9J1B6KxWCgjjsyVIVH53j7ceWdJL9vndATowtCMp3CEQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><p></p><p> </p><p style="white-space: pre-wrap;"><b><a href="https://www.boundarymind.com/communityrecordings" target="_blank">COMMUNITY RECORDING DATES (<b>Free and open to the public!)</b></a></b></p><p style="white-space: pre-wrap;">05/21/22 – <a href="https://www.boundarymind.com/events/social-recording-po-box-collective">@ POBox Collective, 2-5 PM</a> — stay for Jessica Mueller’s community table cloth project!</p><p style="white-space: pre-wrap;">05/28/22 – <a href="https://www.boundarymind.com/events/social-recording-romansusan">@ Berger Park w/ RomanSusan</a>, 2-5 PM</p><p style="white-space: pre-wrap;">06/02/22 – <a href="https://www.boundarymind.com/events/social-recording-6018-north">6018|North , 4-7 PM</a> — stay for a free BBQ!</p><p style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> </p><p style="white-space: pre-wrap;"><b>PREMIERE PERFORMANCES </b></p><p>06/03/22 - 6:30-9:30pm @ presented with ESS with Ensemble Chartreuse<br /></p><p>06/05/22 - 7:30-9:30pm @ presented with ESS</p><p>Performances at 6018|North, located at 6018 N. them. They are objects kept for reasons of oftentimes obscure personal
value, and they can be anything from a cassette tape to a coffee mill,
plastic toy car, pine cone, colorful Mardi Gras beads or wooden spoons.
“boundarymind,” a short film directed by Kera MacKenzie with a
soundtrack by Linda Jankowska and Katherine Young, features these and
other items pulled from the composers’ childhoods. In the film their
keepsakes dangle from the sky, are arranged and rearranged on a
tabletop, beckon from around the corners of an old house, hang from the
branches of a tree, and animate humorous little narratives. They can
also apparently be used to make a lot of noise, despite not being
anything close to proper musical instruments, a situation that allowed
Jankowska and Young to create a composition ranging from clangy to eerie
to plucky. Though many years in the making, “boundarymind” feels
perfectly relevant now, when the pandemic has forced so many of us to
stay home, surrounded by all our stuff. (A participatory
performance/installation of the project scheduled to open at 6018North
and Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago in June has been indefinitely
postponed; a different iteration will happen in March at Roman Susan
with the sculptor Molly Roth Scranton.) <br /></p><div id="artwork_description"><br />—Lori Waxman 2020-10-30 2:47 PM<br /></div>

They use many if not only extended techniques. In<br />cases of this kind of improvisation I tend to use the term ‘abstract’, as I just did, but at the same<br />time, this music is also very physical and down-to-earth.
